Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Skin cancer removal. Reddened area (centre) indicating site of a basal cell carcinoma (BCC), or rodent ulcer, on the skin of a 78-year-old woman. The growth was surgically removed one month previously. BCC is the most common form of skin cancer among fair-skinned people, mostly affecting the elderly. It usually appears on the face and is thought to be caused by the ultraviolet radiation in sunlight. BCC slowly destroys surrounding tissues, but seldom spreads to other parts of the body. Treatments include cryotherapy, radiotherapy, cauterisation and surgical excision.
