Caption: Brain cancer. Gross specimen of a slice of a brain affected by several secondary melanoma tumours (black dots). Melanoma is a cancer of melanocytes, pigment-producing cells found mainly in the skin. It is a highly malignant cancer and spreads (metastasises) rapidly throughout the body. Most commonly it is caused by overexposure to the ultraviolet radiation in sunlight. The most common sites to which it spreads include the lungs, liver and brain. Once it has spread the prognosis is poor.
