Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Fungating tumour around the catheter of a 55 year old man with prostate cancer. The catheter is in the abdomen wall and drains urine from the bladder. A fungating tumour is a malodorous, exuding, necrotic skin lesion. The prostate is a small gland found just below the bladder surrounding the urethra, the tube urine passes through. Impaired urination due to the obstruction of the urethra by an enlarged prostate is the main symptom of prostate cancer. The causes of prostate cancer are not known, but it is more prevalent in men over 50 years of age. Treatment is with hormone therapy, chemotherapy or surgery to remove the prostate.
