Caption: Cancer in the larynx. Endoscope view of the inside of the larynx (voicebox) of a patient with squamous carcinoma of the larynx. The larynx (voicebox) is the lower part of the throat, and forms part of the upper respiratory tract. The larynx contains the vocal cords (centre left), where air passing out of the lungs resonates to produce vocal sounds. The vocal cords are normally smooth, but here are rough and irregular due to the cancer. Cancer of the larynx can be caused by smoking. Treatment involves removal of the cancerous tissue, with radiotherapy and chemotherapy. An endoscope is a tube, with a camera on its tip, used to examine the inside of the body.
