Caption: Light micrograph of squamous cell carcinoma, a highly malignant tumour developing from the surface epithelium of the human tongue. The tumour forms interconnecting tracts or bands of cells which invade the underlying light & comparatively unstained connective tissue. Invasion of adjacent tissue is one of the features of a malignant tumour as distinct from a benign tumour. The red/pink oval structures are foci of keratinisation where the surface epithelium has hardened. Magnification: x40 at 35mm.
