Caption: Light micrograph showing oat cell carcinoma of the bronchus, a highly malignant cancer that affects the airways of the lung. The tumour appears as the blue-stained mass over the left side of the image. Oat cell carcinoma is so called because of the resemblance of the tightly-packed, oval tumour cells to oat grains, when viewed at high magnifications. Such tumours rapidly invade the bronchial walls & may compress & invade surrounding blood vessels, leading to early spread (metastasis) to other organs. Oat cell carcinoma has the worst prognosis of the three common types of lung cancers. Magnification: X 3 at 35mm size.
