Caption: Light micrograph of a sample of blood showing acute myeloblastic leukaemia. Leukaemia is a blood disorder in which the bone marrow or other blood forming organs over produce a certain type of white blood cell. These are immature & abnormal cells. The suppression of the normal production of white & red cells & platelets ultimately leads to anaemia. Three myeloblasts are visible in this image, surrounded by smaller, disc-shaped red blood cells. The sample shows rod-shaped structures called Auer rods in the cytoplasm of the myeloblast cells. These are evidence of myeloblastic leukaemia. Magnification: x900 at 35mm size.
