Caption: Light micrograph showing cells of a human lymph node in Hodgkin's disease, a cancer of the lymphoreticular system. Hodgkin's disease usually presents by the appearance of lymph node enlargement and later by enlargement of the spleen & liver and through bone marrow involvement. Various histological sub-types exist, each with a different pattern of behaviour & prognosis. This image is of a lymphocyte-depleted pattern, which carries the worst prognosis. The dominant cell type is a pale-staining histiocyte-like cell, some with large, abnormal nuclei (called Reed-Sternberg cells). The smaller, dark-staining lymphocytes are less numerous.
