Caption: Cancer cell. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of a metastatic (migrating) cancer cell. This cancer cell (orange) has broken away from the primary site of malignancy and is spreading to another site. It is advancing by long outgrowths of its cytoplasm (pseudopodia) along what may be the wall of a blood vessel. Such cancerous spread can occur through the blood, lymph, or across a body cavity. Cancer cells are larger than normal cells, they divide rapidly, and show evidence of chromosome abnormality. Another factor is their ability to invade surrounding tissue and colonize sites far distant from the original tumour. Magnification: x6,000 at 6x7cm size.
