Caption: Light micrograph of human stomach cancer. Known also as gastric adenocarcinoma. At above and below centre, gastric glands are seen (purple) with large nuclei. Many of these epithelial glandular cells show considerable mitotic activity, some with double nuclei. Adenocarcinoma is a malignant tumour arising from the epithelium of glandular structures. At centre, below bands of connective tissue (pink) is an infiltration of inflammatory cells caused as a reaction to this tumour. Stomach cancer requires early detection before it spreads beyond the stomach lining. Gastrectomy is a common treatment. Magnification: x60 at 35mm size.
