Caption: Cancer cell. Coloured transmission electron micro- graph (TEM) of a cross-section through a single human cancer cell. The typical uneven surface of the cell and its cytoplasmic projections can be seen. The cell has undergone a mitotic division, producing a daughter cell (at upper right). DNA genetic material (dark blue) is scattered in the cytoplasm & is not formed into a distinct nucleus. Cancerous (malignant) cells form tumours which proliferate and grow in a chaotic manner, with defective cell division retained in each new generation of cells. They invade and destroy surrounding tissues and may travel to other parts of the body. Magnification: x8000 at 6x4.5cm size.
