Caption: Leukaemia cell. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a cancerous white blood cell in acute myeloid leukaemia. Leukaemia is a cancer of the blood which results in the over-production of abnormal and immature white blood cells in the bone marrow. The cancerous cell here shows signs of genetic mutation as it is larger than healthy white blood cells. The proliferation of cancerous white blood cells can impair the production of other types of blood cell and affect the immune system. Leukaemia may also cause other organs to stop functioning properly as they become infiltrated by cancerous white blood cells. Magnification: unknown.
