Caption: Colon cancer. Light micrograph of a section through adenocarcinoma cells in the colon (large intestine). This is one of the most common forms of cancer. Adenocarcinomas are cancers arising from glandular epithelial cells, such as mucus-secreting cells in the gut. The cells have large irregular nuclei (darker purple) which are dividing in a chaotic manner. Cancer of the colon is generally treated by removal of part or all of the colon (colectomy). However, if the cancer is too extensive, surgery may not be possible. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy slow the cancer's growth, but only delay death. Brightfield illumination. Magnification: x100 at 35mm size.
