Caption: Leukaemia cell. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a cancerous white blood cell (leucocyte) from a patient with chronic lymphoid leukaemia. Leukaemia is a cancer of the blood which results in the over-production of abnormal and immature leucocytes. Cancerous white blood cells can impair the production of other types of blood cell and affect the immune system. Leukaemia may also cause other organs to stop functioning properly as they become infiltrated by cancerous white blood cells. Treatment is by radiation therapy and chemotherapy (anti-cancer drugs).
