Caption: Lung cancer. Light micrograph of a section through a lung with oat cell carcinoma (dark purple areas). This cancer gets its name from its small densely-packed oat-grain-like cells. It is also known as small cell undifferentiated carcinoma. Cancer cells divide continuously, growing chaotically to form clumps of cells called tumours. Oat cell carcinoma is the most malignant type of lung cancer, as it rapidly invades and destroys surrounding tissue, as well as migrating (metastasizing) to other parts of the body at an early stage. Diagnosis is usually too late to allow effective treatment. Brightfield illumination. Magnification: x25 at 35mm size.
