Caption: Lung cancer. Light micrograph of a section through lung tissue showing a plasmacytoma (myeloma), a cancer of plasma cells that usually occurs in bone marrow. The abnormal cells secrete the protein amyloid, which forms the smooth pale pink areas (for instance at upper left). In the lung, this cancer causes coughing (sometimes with bloody sputum) and breathing difficulties. Normal plasma cells produce antibodies as part of the immune system. As the cancer develops from one type of plasma cell, production of the type of antibody it produced is greatly increased. This may cause kidney failure and also suppresses the immune response. Magnification unknown.
