Caption: Oesophagus cancer. Light micrograph of a section through an adenoacanthoma. This is a cancer that arises mostly from glandular epithelium, secretory tissue that lines internal and external surfaces of the body. The oesophagus is the tube that leads from the mouth to the stomach. Smoking and alcohol consumption to excess, are thought to contribute to cancer in this region. As the cancer develops it may block the oesophagus, causing pain when food and drink is swallowed. Early detection, followed by removal (oesophagectomy) can prolong life and may cure the patient. Magnification unknown.
