Caption: Oesophagus cancer. Light micrograph of a section through a carcinoma (type of cancer) of the lining (epithelium) of the oesophagus or gullet. It is a malignant tumour (neoplasm) that primarily occurs at the lower end of the oesophagus. The cancerous cells seen (pink) have dark nuclei. Its cause is not fully understood, but smoking and excessive alcohol consumption may contribute. As it develops it may block the oesophagus, causing pain when food and drink is swallowed. Early detection, followed by removal (oesophagectomy) can prolong life and may cure the patient. Magnification unknown.
