Caption: Skin cancer. Light micrograph of a section through human skin afflicted with a basal cell carcinoma, a common skin tumour that arises from the basal cells of the epidermis. Although the cancer behaves malignantly by invading the underlying dermis it almost never metastasizes (spreads to other tissues). This section shows a nodular tumour, the edges of which are defined by cells arranged in a palisade (fence-like) pattern (upper left). Cells within the tumour are more haphazardly arranged. The skin surface is at top. Basal cell carcinomas occur mostly on areas of skin exposed to light, particularly the face. The lesions are commonly known as rodent ulcers.
