Caption: Leukaemia cell. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a leukaemia cell. Leukaemia is a type of cancer, it affects the bone marrow and white blood cells (leucocytes). The bone marrow is the site of blood cell production. In leukaemia, a large number of abnormal cells are produced. These accumulate in the tissue and are eventually released into the circulating blood. The overproduction of abnormal cells crowds out normal white and red blood cells, leading to anaemia, lack of oxygen, inability to fight infections and non-clotting blood. Leukaemia is treated with anti-cancer drugs and radiotherapy.
