Caption: Oral cancer. Light micrograph of a section through soft palate tissue showing cancerous cells. The soft palate is suspended from the rear of the roof of the mouth (hard palate). This is a carcinoma, a malignant (cancerous) tumour that arises from the lining (epithelium) of the mouth. The most common form of oral cancer is squamous cell carcinoma. The two most important risk factors for oral cancers are smoking and heavy alcohol consumption. Treatment is with surgical removal, often combined with radiation therapy and chemotherapy.
