Caption: Vocal cord cancer. Light micrograph of a section through vocal cord (glottis) tissue showing cancerous cells. This is a carcinoma, a malignant (cancerous) tumour that arises from the lining (epithelium) of the vocal cords. The most common form of vocal cord cancer is squamous cell carcinoma. The two most important risk factors for this cancer are smoking and heavy alcohol consumption. Other risk factors include chronic laryngitis and exposure to wood dust and asbestos. The majority of cases are found in men over 50. Treatment is with radiation therapy or laser excision of the tumour. Prognosis is good and vocal function can often be preserved.
