Caption: Cactus spines. Close-up of the stem of a Sahuaro cactus (Cereus giganteus). The stems of these huge cacti are heavily ribbed, with regularly spaced tufts of spines along the ribs. Sahuaro cacti may live for up to 200 years and attain a height of 15 metres and a weight of 8 tonnes. The species is an inhabitant of the Sonoran desert of Arizona and Mexico, where conditions are particularly suited to tree-sized columnar cacti.
