Caption: Cactus flower. Flower of the night-blooming organ pipe cactus, Stenocerus sp, against the backdrop of the Milky Way. The cactus flowers open at night because the heat of the day in its desert environment would wilt the petals. The Milky Way is composed of stars which lie in the plane of our galaxy's disc, as is the Sun. When an observer on Earth looks along this plane, the stars appear as a bright band in the sky. Photographed at the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument in Arizona, USA.
