Caption: Leukaemia blood cells. Light micrograph of blood cells in a blood smear from a patient with acute myeloid leukaemia. The large, dark pink cells are white blood cells, while the smaller, pale pink cells are red blood cells. Leukaemia is a cancer of the white blood cells, leading to an increase in their number. It is termed acute when the onset of the disease is sudden, as opposed to the long-term, chronic form. Myeloid leukaemia affects the white blood cell precursors (myeloblasts) that form a type of white blood cell known as granulocytes. Magnification: x500 when printed 10cm wide.
