Caption: Echinocereus subterraneus. View of the red flowers and spiny green stem of the cactus Echinocereus subterraneus. Cacti of the genus Echinocereus are native to Mexico where they can grow at up to 2000 meter elevations, usually in short columns, some of which form huge clumps. This cactus has a characteristic red-coloured flower. The spines of this plant are modified leaves forming a sharp- pointed structure. These perform the dual function of protecting the cactus from herbivores and reducing the moisture loss associated with normal plant leaves. Cacti are an example of succulent plants; those that can store water in swollen tissue and survive in desert regions.
