Caption: Oreocereus fossulatus. View of an open berry on the cactus Oreocereus fossulatus. The large yellow fruit has been split open and black seeds are seen within it's white flesh. The cactus also has several dried red flowers around it's stem which is covered with a thick layer of hair-like spines. The genus Oreocereus is made up of several attractive species, all of which are cultivated. The spines of a cactus are modified leaves protecting the plant from herbivores and reducing moisture loss. Cacti are an example of succulent plants; those that can store water in swollen tissue and survive in desert regions.
