Caption: Beavertail cactus. View of the flowering Beavertail cactus (Opuntia basilaris) growing in the desert. This cactus inhabits dry, rocky desert slopes. It is a low, spreading cactus with short bristles. It grows 6 to 12 inches high and up to 6 feet wide. Opuntia sp. are the most widely distributed cacti, found all over North and South America and their neighbouring islands. The genus is typified by flattened, ovoid, jointed stems. Cacti are an example of succulent plants; those that store water in swollen tissue and survive in desert regions. Photographed in the Mojave Desert, California, USA.
