Fluorescent dyes have been used to highlight cellular structures and proteins: actin (green), cell nuclei (blue), ubiquitin (red). Actin is a protein that is a major part of a cell's cytoskeleton. Ubiquitin is a regulatory protein used by cells to label proteins for destruction (proteolysis). It is being investigated for its possible role in destroying cancer cells. These cells are glial cells, one of the support tissues found in the brain.
