Caption: Series of 2 PET scans (positron emission tomography) of axial sections of the brain of a person suffering from a large cancerous tumour in the left cerebral hemisphere. The images show the incorporation of a radioactive tracer (methionine, an amino acid) in protein synthesis within the brain. The image on left was taken 1 minute after injecting the tracer & shows the tracer in the vascular spaces (red, bottom) and in and around the tumour (whose active growth is accompanied by a high degree of protein synthesis). The image on right, taken 45 minutes later shows further concentration (red & black areas) in the tumour area.
