Caption: Gamma camera scan of the skull of a person suffering from secondary (metastatic) bone cancer. The gamma camera is a diagnostic device used widely in the detection & management of cancers - often as a means of detecting secondary disease after a patient has received treatment for their primary cancer. This colour-coded image represents the position & intensity of radiation emitted from a short-lived radioactive tracer that is metabolized or is concentrated in the part of the body under investigation - in this case, bone. The radioisotope concentrates more strongly in cancerous than in normal bone & this is represented by the red areas on the image.
