Caption: False colour computed X-ray tomography (CT) scan of the chest of a man aged 56 years, showing cancer of the left bronchus - lung cancer. The scan reveals a dramatic contrast in appearance between the healthy right lung (left on image, blue) and the cancerous left lung (white). In CT, a narrow X-ray beam is directed through the subject towards a diametrically-opposed detector. A series of "slices" is made, with source & detector moving synchronously around the subject. A computer constructs the image from data relating to the attenuation of X-rays by different tissues. Courtesy of Radiography Dept, Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
