Caption: Chordoma spinal cancer. Coloured 3-D Computed Tomography (CT) scan of the spine and ribcage of a male patient in top view, showing cancer of the spine. This cancer is a mediastinal chordoma. Curved rib-bones of the ribcage are seen, with the front of the body at bottom. At top left and right are triangular bones of the shoulder blades (blue); at centre is a vertebral bone (brown) of the spine. Next to the vertebra (at right, orange) is the cancerous tumour. Chordoma is defined as a malignant tumour arising from remnants of the embryonic notochord, that persists in adults as part of intervertebral discs. This rare tumour may seriously affect posture, and may be fatal.
