Caption: Rainbow cactus. Close-up of the spines of a rainbow cactus (Echinocereus pectinatus). The spines covering this plant are modified leaves. They protect the cactus from herbivores and reduce the moisture loss associated with normal plant leaves. Cacti are succulents, plants that store water in swollen tissue and survive in desert regions. Photographed in Inks Lake State Park, Texas, USA.
