Caption: Cancer of the colon. Coloured immunoscintigram of a malignant tumour (white, upper left) in the colon. This image was obtained by injecting the patient with radioactively labelled antibodies that bind specifically to the tumour. Gamma rays emitted by the labelled antibodies are then detected with a gamma camera. The final image shows areas of high activity in red and white, and areas of low activity in blue and black. Cancer of the colon is one of the most common forms of cancer in the UK. The disease is thought to be caused by a number of factors, including diet, heredity and other diseases. Successful treatment depends on early detection.
