Parathyroid cancer. Two coloured SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography) scans showing metastatic parathyroid cancer in a patient. The left scan is 15 minutes and the right 5 hours after the patient has been injected with the radioactive tracer technetium-99M. This radionucleotide is used to detect cancerous cells. The left image shows an initial concentration of the tracer (yellow & red colouring) around the parathyroid glands in the neck. The right image shows the spread of the radioactive tracer, and hence the cancer, to other parts of the body (known as metastasis).
