Caption: Lung cancer. Coloured three-dimensional Computed Tomography scan (CT scan) of a patient with a cancerous tumour (yellow) in a lung. Normal lung tissue is blue whilst major air passages are red. The green rod is a "virtual endoscope" which allows a doctor to travel through and view the CT data closely. The structures around the mid-lung region are shown in the grey "slice" image. Lung cancer is one of the commonest & most dangerous cancers. The main causes include cigarette smok- ing, pollution & the spread of cancer cells from elsewhere. CT scans use thin beams of X-rays to produce images of the body which are combined by a computer to form "slice" images through the body.
