Caption: Liver tumour. Coloured angiogram X-ray of the liver showing a rounded tumour (upper centre). The tumour has an irregular blood supply around it. Liver cancers may be primary (originating in the liver) or, more commonly, secondary (having spread from elsewhere). Symptoms of the cancer include weight loss, lack of appetite and pain in the upper right abdomen. Primary cancer may be treated by excision or a total liver transplant. There is no cure for the secondary cancer, although anti-cancer drugs may slow its progress. Angiograms are produced by injecting an artery (here the hepatic artery at lower right) with a radio-opaque substance, and taking an X-ray.
