Caption: Colon cancer. Coloured barium X-ray showing cancer (mottled orange area, upper right) of the colon, part of the large intestine. The colon is one of the most common sites for cancer in the western world, symptoms including constipation and/or diarrhoea, blood in the faeces and abdominal pain. Treatment normally includes partial colectomy (removal of part of the intestine). Barium is opaque to X-rays, and is given rectally (a barium enema) before examination of the colon and rectum. It coats the inside wall of the intestine and shows up strongly on X-ray film, allowing clinical diagnosis of conditions including cancer.
