Caption: Liver cancer. Coloured ultrasound scan of a liver with secondary (metastatic) cancers (red). These have spread to the liver from a primary cancer site elsewhere in the body. The liver is a large organ situated in the upper right region of the abdomen. It performs many vital functions, such as detoxifying the blood, producing bile to aid fat digestion, and manufacturing and storing metabolic body products. The prognosis for liver cancer is poor. Treatment involves radiotherapy and, in the case of metastatic cancers, systemic (whole body) chemotherapy. Ultrasound scans are obtained using reflected high-frequency sound waves to build-up a picture of internal body structures.
