Caption: Proton storage ring. Part of the Proton Storage Ring (PSR) at the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility (LAMPF). The ring itself is the tube at right. The smaller tube at left is a proton injector. Protons are introduced into the storage ring, where they are accelerated to an energy of 800 million electron volts (MeV). Very short pulses (about 750 microseconds) of protons are sent to a heavy metal target. The collisions at the target produce intense bursts of low-energy neutrons. These are then used to investigate the structure and dynamics of solids, liquids, surfaces and complex molecules.
