Caption: Teddy-bear cholla cactus (Opuntia bigelovii, light brown) with an ocotillo (Fouquieria splendens, green), growing in the Sonoran Desert, USA. The teddy-bear cholla cactus is found throughout the Mojave and Colorado deserts in south-western North America. Its stem segments break off easily when its spines become caught in the fur of a passing animal. These segments are carried away from the mature plant and may grow into new plants if conditions are favourable. The ocotillo possesses long green stems which may reach a height of over 7 metres. Photographed in Saguaro National Park, Arizona.
