Caption: Lung cancer. Coloured chest X-ray with a squamous cell lung cancer (red) in the patient's right-hand lung. This is a stage IIIa squamous cell cancer of the lung. Squamous cell lung cancer begins in the large bronchi. The precancerous stage can last for years. Stage III means that the cancer has spread to new areas, including some or all of the chest wall, diaphragm, and various chest lymph nodes. Stage IIIa is removable by surgery, while stage IIIb is not. Lung cancers are most often caused by cigarette smoking and pollution. The lungs are the two dark spaces, with the heart, upper abdomen and chest bones seen in yellow.
