Lung cancer. Frontal chest X-ray of the lungs of an 83-year-old patient with small cell lung cancer (SCLC). The cancer is seen as a mass in the left lung. SCLC affects epithelial tissue and is the most aggressive type of lung cancer. It spreads (metastasises) to other parts of the lung and body early on in the illness. The main cause of SCLC is cigarette smoking. Symptoms include chest pain, shortness of breath and a cough. Treatment is usually with a combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, which SCLC is very responsive to.
