The thyroid is an endocrine gland found in the neck, responsible for the production of hormones controlling the body's metabolism. Using the radioactive tracer iodine-123, a scintigram shows the activity of the thyroid gland, from red (most active areas) through yellow and green to blue (least active areas). Cancerous cells cannot pick up the tracer and so no activity is detected. The area is known as a cold nodule.
