Secondary cancer, CT and PET scans

Rights Managed

Secondary cancer. Coloured composite computed tomography (CT) and positron emission tomography (PET) scans of sections through the abdomen of a patient with metastatic tumours (pink) in ganglion cells of the nervous system. A radioactive tracer, injected into the patient's blood stream, has been taken up by the tumours. A metastatic cancer is a secondary cancer that has spread (metastasised) from the site of the original cancer, which in this case was ovarian cancer. Once a cancer has spread the prognosis is poor.
