Caption: Narrowed rectum. Coloured X-ray of a stenosis (narrowing) of the rectum. The narrowing is at lower centre (orange and green). The rectum is the final part of the digestive system. Surrounding the rectum are the bones of the pelvis. A stenosis of the rectum can be diagnosed by passing a radio- opaque material through the digestive system. This will absorb X-rays and show the internal structure of the intestines. A likely cause of the rectal stenosis is cancer, where the cancer (green) is blocking the rectum. The cancer would be surgically removed, though if it has spread to other parts of the body, the prognosis is poor.
