Oesophageal cancer. Barium X-ray of a side view of the chest of a patient with a malignant (cancerous) tumour in the oesophagus, the tube that joins the throat and the stomach. The tumour is causing stenosis (narrowing) of the oesophagus. Symptoms may include difficulty swallowing, weight loss and vomiting. Risk factors for oesophageal cancer include smoking and alcohol consumption. Treatment is surgical removal of the tumour, often combined with chemotherapy or radiotherapy. The patient was given a meal containing radio-opaque barium before the X-ray to reveal any anomalies.
