Caption: Cancer of the larynx. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scan through the neck of a patient with a cancer (orange) of the larynx. This is a coronal slice, passing vertically through the neck, as seen from the front. The larynx (voicebox) is the lower part of the throat, and forms part of the upper respiratory tract. Air from the mouth and nose passes through the larynx to reach the lungs. The larynx contains the vocal cords, and air passing out of the lungs resonates in the larynx to produce vocal sounds. Cancer of the larynx can be caused by smoking. Treatment involves removal of the cancerous tissue, with radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
