Caption: Brain haemorrhage. Computer artwork of the blood vessels in the human head, showing an intracereb- ral brain haemorrhage which may lead to a cerebrovascular accident, or stroke. The large orange area at top left is a blood-filled area, or brain haemorrhage. This can be caused by a head injury or by the spontaneous rupture of a blood vessel. The carotid arteries carry blood from the body's main artery, the aorta (seen at bottom centre) to the head. Stroke is a major cause of death in developed countries. If patients survive, damage to the brain can cause varied symptoms, such as weakness or paralysis.
